Recycling Grant Program Supports Community Computer
Recycling Events, Educates Consumers
Milwaukee, Jan. 29, 2004 — Dell
Inc. today announced the award of $10,000 to Keep
Greater Milwaukee Beautiful to be used to conduct a computer
collection event this spring. Keep Greater Milwaukee Beautiful and
its partner, the Southeast Wisconsin Waste Reduction Coalition,
were among twelve grant winners selected from a competitive group
of 200 applicants that included state and local governments, higher
education institutions and non-profit organizations.
Grantees will use the award to organize, promote, stage and recycle
computer equipment in an effective, free “No Computer Should
Go To Waste” collection event in their community. Dell also
will continue to conduct its own recycling events in 2004.
“The grant from Dell is intended to support
Keep Greater Milwaukee Beautiful’s efforts to raise awareness
of responsible end-of-life options for computers and empower the
community with a model and means for successful collection events,”
said Pat Nathan, Dell’s Sustainable Business Director. “The
enthusiastic response to this grant program is a display of the
far-reaching interest in and need for electronics recycling programs
in communities across the country.”
Keep Greater
Milwaukee Beautiful intends to collaborate
with Cascade Assets in Madison to stage a computer collection event
in mid-May at State Fair Park. The free event will serve all the
communities of southeast Wisconsin.
“We are extremely honored to have received
this recycling grant from Dell,” says Woody Dugan, Executive
Director, Keep Greater Milwaukee Beautiful. “It is a recognition
for our work and commitment and that of our partners to recycling
education and related programs. We hope everyone with older computer
will participate in this single day collection program we are planning
for the spring.”
As part of the program, Keep Greater Milwaukee
Beautiful, and other grantees will receive technical assistance
and guidance from the National Recycling Coalition (NRC) to aid
in the success of their events. NRC will conduct a series of grantee
trainings to share best practices, create a supportive team atmosphere,
and encourage dialogue and interaction among grantee organizations.
The training will also cover strategies for developing effective
partnerships for collection and selection of responsible recycling
processors, fund development, and media and grassroots outreach.
“These grants will empower communities
from Alaska to Tennessee to initiate the important process of educating
consumers about the importance of electronics recycling and building
public-private partnerships that will find innovative solutions
to address the e-scrap challenge,” said Kate Krebs, executive
director of the National Recycling Coalition.
The 10-member grant review board, consisting
of individuals from a variety of Dell business units, the federal
government and experts from environmental and recycling organizations,
based its selections on considerations of the quality of the collaborative
effort, prospects for successful outcomes, geographic diversity,
sustainability of the program beyond the grant period and the ability
to leverage the local community’s existing recycling infrastructure.
