The Be Smart Educator Excellence Awards recognize
Southeast Wisconsin Educators who help our communities reduce waste
or pollution, save energy or conserve water.
Special recognition is give to the
CITY OF BELOIT DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS, SOLID WASTE TEAM,
BELOIT, WISCONSIN
The Solid Waste Team believes that education
must be part of waste and recycling collection routes. Members share
information with citizens one-on-one and in group settings. Team
members communicate recycling and solid waste information with a
targeted approach using red tags that attach to waste containers.
A year of education efforts resulted in a recycling increase of
131.86 tons and a solid waste decrease of 2,396.92 tons. These results
indicate that residents not only recycled more, but changed their
purchasing habits to reduce waste too. The team also implemented
a fee for excess garbage, bulky items and appliances.

Coalition thanks the sponsors
