Two student winners of the Be Smart Scholarship
Awards for waste reduction were announced today. Meghan
Tobin, a resident of Wauwatosa and a student at Divine
Savior Holy Angels High School in Milwaukee, received a $1000 scholarship
for waste reduction work with her school. Her project analyzed bottled
water use at meetings and recommended changes that would save money
and reduce waste.
Kim Pritzl, a resident of
Waukesha, and a student at Carroll College, was awarded a $200 scholarship.
She received a special Be Smart Service Award for assisting Keep
Greater Milwaukee Beautiful with several environmental education
projects.
Students participating in the Be Smart (Save
Money and Reduce Trash) Scholarship Competition take learning from
the classroom into the community, and make real contributions to
the environment. Students help their communities, businesses, schools
and neighborhoods identify wasteful practices and successfully implement
projects that reduce waste, prevent pollution, and conserve energy.
The next deadline for applications is December
1.
The program, now in it's seventh year, was
created by the Southeast Wisconsin Waste Reduction Coalition to
inspire innovation and academic achievement in waste reduction and
resource conservation. The Coalition combines the expertise and
resources of local communities, state agencies, non-profit organizations,
businesses and environmental organizations through a regionally
coordinated waste reduction and recycling campaign.
Business sponsors include FCR, Inc., Onyx Environmental
Services, Recycle America Alliance, Superior Emerald Park Landfill
Standing Committee, Inc., and Tailored Label Products.
