The Be Smart Educator Excellence Awards recognize Southeast Wisconsin Educators who help our communities reduce waste or pollution, save energy or conserve water.
Sheri Walz
University of Wisconsin - Whitewater
Sheri's contributions to waste reduction education have produced an unusually large impact during these past six months - and perhaps beyond. As you know, Sheri is an instructor at UW-Whitewater. Fall semester she required all the students in her Human Environmental Problems class to design and carry out a waste reduction project according to the Be SMART Guidelines. 111 students participated in the assignment producing 38 projects. Of those projects, 5 were judged scholarship winners in the winter Be SMART Scholarship Competition. 8 projects were awarded Honorable Mentions.
Also during fall semester, Sheri coordinated the Nike Reuse-A-Shoe project at Whitewater. Student outreach resulted in the largest single contribution to the project in the Milwaukee area, according to Belle who helped to coordinate the event.
Sheri has also served on the Jefferson County Solid Waste Board for the past year. From that vantage point she, along with the other Board members, oversees waste reduction projects throughout the County. In addition, Sheri has been instrumental in encouraging and facilitating a Solid Waste website for Jefferson County ."
