The Be SMART Educator Excellence Awards recognize Southeast Wisconsin Educators who help our communities reduce waste or pollution, save energy or conserve water.

Christina Buffington
Coordinator, Conservation and Environmental Science Program
University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee

Christina Buffington involved hundreds of UWM students in local environmental actions by making service learning with a Southeast Wisconsin environmental organization or agency a required part of the Environmental Dynamics course.  Her collaboration with the UWM Institute for Service Learning made opportunities to help area environmental groups available to all student volunteers.  In 2004, she played an instrumental role in founding the UWM Environmental Council to improve communication and foster coordination among students, organizations, faculty, staff, administrators and operations managers with an interest in minimizing the campus's environmental impact.  She enrolled the group in the National Wildlife Federation's Campus Ecology Program and takes part in facilitating and supporting the Council.
