Special Tips for Continuing Projects

Here are some special instructions for students who are continuing Be Smart Scholarship Competition projects that began last season or earlier. Following these instructions will help your project achieve a high score from the judges.

If you are working on continuing a project that you or someone else submitted to the Be Smart Scholarship Competition last year, make sure that you introduce something new to the idea. Focus on a way to improve or expand the project and specifically measure the results of your new contribution. Carry out your project in a way that will help you make it clear that you added something new when you write your report in the spring.

Make use of the comments from the Be SMART Scholarship Competition judges if you continue a project that was submitted before. If the people who worked on the project before did not give you a copy of the judge’s comments, you may request the information by sending e-mail to besmart@uwm.edu. Be sure to include the project’s title, the school where it was begun, and the name of a student who submitted the project in the past.

If you are continuing a project that you began in a previous year and never submitted to the Be Smart Scholarship Competition, you do not need to make new changes to the project.

Volunteer mentors are available to help you plan and carry out projects and prepare your project report for the Be Smart Scholarship Competition. We recommend you discuss your ideas with a mentor if you are continuing a project. All of you can request a mentor by sending e-mail to besmart@uwm.edu or by calling the Be SMART Hot Line at 1-866-91-SMART.

Your efforts go a long way to help communities reduce waste. Good Luck!
